Berlin, late twenties. The young American writer Cliff meets and falls in love with Sally Bowles in the notorious Kit-Kat Club. Sally becomes pregnant and they decide to marry, but the time for love and marriage could not be worse. Cliff's neighbours are Jewish fruiterer Isaak Schultz, and Ms Schneider, the pension owner. The windows of Schultz's fruit shop are smashed in by a brown-shirt mob, and horrified, Cliff packs his suitcases and leaves Germany. Any hope for happiness has been suffocated in the strengthening stranglehold of National Socialism.
