Just before the outbreak of war in 1939: three foreigners are put into the cell of a Paris prison for no apparent reasons, the German seaman Lodeck, a Greek cook, and the Polish-Jewish butcher Grünstein. Three men of most different background and temperament start to communicate and to understand one another. They use their daily bread rations to shape chess pieces.
