„Gimpel the fool“ is the sad and funny story of a man who never loses his dignity even in spite of distress and difficulties, a man who gains inner greatness by his faith and patience. But when his wife confesses on her deathbed that be has fathered none of their children, he flees in despair. As a vagrant he roams from village to village and tells throughout the world the sad story of his life wherever he goes. His only happiness, he believes, will be in the next world.
